Close your eyes and go back to your childhood. What did you wish for? What magical places did you dream of visiting? Who was a hero or television star you hoped to meet? What was the toy or piece of technology you couldn't wait to get your hands on? Or did you want a furry companion to cuddle and play with?
What happened when those wishes came true? What was the day like? Who was there? Do you still remember what you were wearing? These are the kind of memories that stick with you for a lifetime.
For our wish kids, the impact and magnitude of their dreams coming to life give them the power and hope to keep fighting their illness. Our Make-A-Wish Iowa staff has worked tirelessly in 2023 to ensure a record number of kids are getting their prescription of hope through wishes coming true.
In the past year, we have set records of not only granting 198 wishes but having 224 new referrals come to us. As our needs have increased, we have brought in new talent to help us think and lead in innovative ways, formulating different processes to be more effective and efficient with our internal operations. Our team of 19 staff has worked relentlessly to ensure that life-lasting memories are made for our wish kids and their families. These moments would never have been possible without our 275 volunteers who seek to get to the heart of a child's wish. And leading it all is our 18-member state-wide board who has spent hours helping to elevate and move the organization forward.
Life-changing wishes happen through careful coordination of time, resources and funding. They wouldn't have been possible without the support of over 13,600 donors from across the state of Iowa who chose to believe in the power of hope. These donors range from the Circle of Hope who have covered the cost of an entire wish to kids at school donating every penny that they have through Kids For Wish Kids! In 2023, we had many in-kind donors who donated time and materials and helped ensure wish enhancements, operational needs, discounts on wish needs and all the little extras were in place for each child. The outpouring of generosity and ingenuity from all corners of our state makes it possible for our organization to fulfill our mission to grant the wish of every eligible child in Iowa. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping us set a record number of wishes granted in the past year.
As long as cancer, genetic disorders and a range of other critical illnesses exist, we have work to do. It's work that requires us to be diligent, thoughtful and present. There is much to celebrate in 2023, and as we plan for 2024, we know our organization — and our wish kids — need you to be part of their story. We look forward to your partnership in helping us deliver hope and encouragement to our wish kids and their families as we move into the new year. We can't do this without each and every one of you.
Sincerely,
Sara Kurovski

Make-A-Wish Iowa is dedicated to creating life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. The following wishes were granted in our last fiscal year.
You'll see that some of the children have a superhero icon to represent them, and we think that suits them perfectly. Some wish families choose to share photos of their wishes, and some do not. A child's journey with Make-A-Wish Iowa doesn't end when their wish is granted! After their wish has been delivered, they join a community of over 4,000 wish alumni and families across the state. Through this program, wish alumni can build relationships with other alumni and families, participate in unique experiences and express their gratitude by ensuring the next child receives their wish.
Get InvolvedThrough the power of life-changing donations, time, expertise and in-kind support, Make-A-Wish Iowa has been able to grant 198 wishes in 2023. With each wish granted, we are providing hope, strength and joy for families across Iowa.
Every child fighting a critical illness in Iowa should have the opportunity to find hope, strength and joy through a wish. With more children waiting in our state than ever before, we need your help to fulfill this mission.

Making a gift to one of our Wishes Forever Funds will ensure our vision lives on in perpetuity. Once the fund reaches $300,000, it will generate approximately a $15,000 drawdown every year to fund a wish for a child in Iowa. State endowment tax credits are available when donating to this local fund.
We are growing community endowment funds across the state of Iowa including the Humboldt County Community Foundation, Marion Community Foundation, Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines, Quad Cities Community Foundation, Lincoln Way Community Foundation in Clinton and Johnson County Community Foundation.
Thank you to all who have contributed to these funds to support life-changing wishes.

There is a true feeling of satisfaction and relief when your hard work in the field turns into a bountiful harvest. And now, Make-A-Wish Iowa is offering one more way you can make an impact on the children fighting critical illnesses — one of these children could be your neighbor.

There is a true feeling of satisfaction and relief when your hard work in the field turns into a bountiful harvest. The ways and means by which each year's yield benefits your family, community and nation are limitless. And now, Make-A-Wish Iowa is offering one more way you can make an impact on the children fighting critical illnesses — one of these children could be your neighbor.
Introducing Harvesting Wishes — a new way for you to fuel hope for the nearly 400 kids waiting for a wish in Iowa.
Every eligible child deserves an opportunity for a life-changing wish to give them the strength, resilience and courage they need to fight harder. The recently released 2022 Wish Impact Study provided quantitative data that shows how wish fulfillment promotes mental and emotional well-being for children and their families. Now, your harvest can not only be fuel for our bodies as well as other energy sources, it can fuel hope.
A wish experience is more than a moment in time, and of those surveyed, 94% of parents recalled seeing improvements in their child's emotional well-being, so much so that 91% of parents reported the wish gave their child a better chance of surviving their illness. Through Harvesting Wishes, we ask you to consider donating an amount of your harvest to a wish that is waiting in your community. The process is simple when working with your local elevator, and you can take advantage of tax opportunities as well. Learn more about this process by visiting harvestingwishes.org.
Together, we create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.
Research shows that the promise of a wish being fulfilled can help children build physical and emotional strength, improving their quality of life and giving them a better chance of recovering. We hear every day from wish kids who view their wish as a turning point and a celebration of their resilience and strength.

We hear every day from wish kids who view their wish as a turning point and a celebration of their resilience and strength.
Each year, hundreds of people come together to grant wishes throughout our community. By joining our Circle of Hope, you'll write the prescription for Hope for children battling a critical illness in Iowa, uniting with the volunteers and staff who bring these wishes to fruition.
The Circle of Hope is an exclusive group of individuals and corporations who write the prescription of Hope for our Iowa wish children.
While not all of us don a white coat and stethoscope, each of us have the ability to write the prescription of Hope for children battling critical illnesses. Members of our Circle of Hope may not have attended multiple years of medical school to write a prescription for an antibiotic, but they write a prescription of Hope by sharing the power of a wish.
Circle of Hope donors may enjoy VIP experiences that include invitations to exclusive events, special wish updates, behind-the-scenes access to the power of a wish and recognition in our Annual Report. All of this while knowing they are forever changing the lives of Iowa children and their families when they need it most.
Circle of Hope members contribute $15,000 or more annually to make wishes come true for Iowa children.

Make-A-Wish Iowa couldn't do the work we do without our incredible volunteers! We have 275 volunteers that grant wishes, help at events and support our mission. They are dedicated and passionate about the work we do, and we are so grateful for them.

Camping World is a significant in-kind partner for our travel trailer wishes. Patrick Plumley, a salesman with the Cedar Falls location, goes above and beyond on each travel trailer wish. With the help of Make-A-Wish Iowa's Wish Managers, Patrick learns the interests of each child and hunts for the perfect wish enhancements to make their experience that much more special. He takes his time decorating the trailers and has given so many gifts to wish children, like a new bike to wish kid Isla. In addition to sparking joy at reveals, Patrick checks in with families to answer any questions. Thank you, Patrick and Camping World, for your commitment to creating lifelong memories for the children you work with!
Our organization has also seen an increase in construction wishes. While these wishes are extremely rewarding, they can also be complex and time-consuming. We could not grant these wishes without the help of community partners like The Weitz Company.
“The Make-A-Wish experience gives more back to our team than we will ever be able to give the kids. Being able to use our building skills to bring their vision to life is a rewarding task to give some levity to families facing overwhelming barriers,” said Vince Ward, Business Development Director at The Weitz Company.
You can grant life-changing wishes by sharing your talents and skills. Your donations help lower the cost of wishes and keep our overhead costs low. Visit wish.org/iowa/inkind to learn how you can help!
The Weitz Company worked with Ben to make his wish of a dragon lair come to life! “These families are going through a lot of challenges daily. It is great to know we can provide an escape right in their backyard to have some fun in the playhouses we have built.” Troy Randolph, Senior Project Superintendent, The Weitz Company.
A wish child's medical needs can provide a multitude of barriers in their everyday life that can make their wishes difficult for their families to provide for them. Make-A-Wish has the knowledge, experience and resources to remove many of these barriers and make their wish not only possible but also safe.
Show MoreA wish child's medical needs can provide a multitude of barriers in their everyday life that can make their wishes difficult for their families to provide for them. Make-A-Wish has the knowledge, experience and resources to remove many of these barriers and make their wish not only possible but also safe. There are many medical considerations for each wish type, depending on the child's needs. For travel wishes, many of our families have not traveled with their children since they have been diagnosed and aren't sure whether it is safe for their child to travel or how to travel with all their child's medical equipment. For gift wishes, the item the child wants is often coupled with the medical accessories that make it possible for the child to utilize that gift, for example, a lift to assist the child into a pool or hot tub.
Make-A-Wish reviews each child's wish with their medical provider to ensure that the wish is safe for the child and receive information on the child's medical devices and prescriptions that need to be considered. We also have a team of pediatric physicians that serve on our medical advisory board, assisting our staff with conversations and considerations for our more medically fragile wish children. Make-A-Wish Iowa doesn't just grant the wish of every eligible child; we ensure that the wish is granted in the safest possible way for the child and remove barriers so that the child and their family can enjoy the wish.
In addition to being well prepared prior to granting a child's wish, Make-A-Wish Iowa staff provide 24/7 emergency services to all families, available to address any medical emergencies or concerns that arise during the wish.
Our thanks to those who referred children between September 1, 2022–August 31, 2023.

If you would like to find out more information about volunteering, please reach out to Kacie Ballard, our Volunteer Engagement Coordinator, at kballard@iowa.wish.org. Kacie will provide you with the tools you need to assist a wish child on their full wish journey.
If you are already a volunteer and would like to jump back in to granting wishes, please reach out to Morgan Potzner, our Volunteer Wish Discovery & Relations Manager, at mpotzner@iowa.wish.org. We may need you to update paperwork and take an online refresher training. Depending on where you left off, we will have you go on a few wishes with a mentor volunteer who has experience to show you the ropes.
Wish granting is such a powerful way to be involved hands with our mission. These precious kids and families are the strongest people we know. We would absolutely love to have you join us in volunteering!
